In conjunction with the ITP Spring workshop "M theory," the ITP will host a conference entitled Avatars of M-theory from June 5-8, 2001, at the ITP,
University of California, Santa Barbara campus. This conference will focus on the most exciting recent developments in string theory and M-theory.
In recent years, it has become clear that the different perturbative string theories, along with a new eleven-dimensional theory which contains 11d
supergravity as its low energy limit, all arise as different avatars of a single underlying structure known as M-theory. However, a precise definition of
M-theory is only known in certain very simple backgrounds, and a good understanding of M-theory dynamics in compactifications with reduced
supersymmetry and cosmological backgrounds is still lacking. This conference will focus on the promising new developments that are taking place in
each of these directions.
Confirmed speakers are(to date): Bobby Acharya, Mina Aganagic, Nima Arkani-Hamed, Tom Banks, Jan De Boer, Emanuel Diaconescu, Savas
Dimopoulos, Willy Fischler, David Gross, Gary Horowitz, Igor Klebanov, Juan Maldacena, Greg Moore, Joe Polchinski, John Schwarz, Ashoke Sen,
Eva Silverstein, Cumrun Vafa, Ed Witten, and Barton Zweibach.
The attendance at the conference is limited.
