Simon Raab holds a doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University, Montreal, Canada, (Fracture Theory in artificial joint fixation), a Masters of Engineering Physics from Cornell University (Surface Physics), and a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Waterloo, Canada.
After receiving his doctorate in 1981, Raab licensed the joint fixation technology developed as part of his PhD thesis to Bristol Myers. In 1982, Raab founded FARO Technologies, Inc. The company specialized in 3-dimensional orthopedic diagnostics and computer-sided surgery. Among other medical diagnostic patents, Raab holds patents describing the combination of 3-D measurement, CAT/MRI Scan data and surgical tools to permit surgeons to navigate during surgery. In 1994 the company decided to license its computer-aided surgical technology to a number of medical manufacturers including Medtronics, and proceeded to apply its 3-dimensional measurement know-how to the field of industrial measurement.
The company went public in 1997 (NASDAQ: FARO) and now has sales of $125 million with over 600 employees in the major industrial markets world-wide. Headquartered in Orlando FL., FARO maintains European headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany and Asian headquarters in Singapore and has satellite sales and service facilities in virtually every industrial market.
As the CEO and V.P. of Product Development, Raab has enjoyed the challenges of the business and technical developments. FARO Technologies and its international subsidiaries have designed, developed, and marketed portable, computerized measurement devices which allow manufacturers to perform 3-D inspections of parts and assemblies, reverse engineering and product design. As a pioneer in the development of CAM2 systems and services for manufacturers of automotive, aerospace, industrial and consumer products, Raab currently holds 50 U.S. patents with associated foreign patents in the fields of industrial measurement, biomaterials and medical diagnostics.
A member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Raab has served as the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of the Company since its inception in 1982. He is transitioning to Co-CEO beginning in 2006 as part of a succession plan.
Simon and Diana his wife of 28 years, parents to 3 children, recently moved to Santa Barbara from Orlando as part of his transition process and Simon looks forward to pursuing his continued fascination with physics among their other interests.
