Art, Image and Science at the KITP

The KITP has a permanent collection of art displayed throughout Kohn Hall, its distinctive and innovative home designed by acclaimed architect Michael Graves. The institute also sets aside a special area for occasional exhibitions that are open to the public. A committee that includes two highly regarded local artists, Marcia Burtt and Beth Westen, and the Curator of Photograpy at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Karen Sinsheimer, advises on selection and installation. An innovative electronic, dual screen, rotating display of scientific imagery can be enjoyed in the new lobby of Kohn Hall, made possible by a gift from Eli and Leatrice Luria.

The purpose of this initiative goes beyond complementing a Michael Graves building with well-chosen art. Public interest in the interaction of image, art and science is growing rapidly, and represents an expanding opportunity for outreach. Art at the KITP opens up the opportunity to attract a wide audience to explore relationships between science and art, and to promote interaction between practitioners in both areas.
