The Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics is internationally renowned among the world's scientists, particularly physicists.The KITP's mission is to serve as a users facility, and for over twenty-five years, the institute has been hosting the world's most prominent physicists at programs and conferences designed to provoke interactions leading to insights into the most intellectually provocative scientific questions of the day.

To date, three of the institute's five directors have won Nobel Prizes, and nine Nobel Laureates have served as advisors on its national scientific board.The institute's visitors number over one thousand annually. It is a vibrant and uniquely valuable national resource providing leadership for the future of science.

The KITP brings together diverse groups of theoretical physicists and other scientists to do research in areas of science that are timely, important and intellectually challenging.

KITP programs encompass particle and nuclear physics, astrophysics and cosmology, condensed-matter physics, atomic and molecular physics, and emerging interdisciplinary fields such as biophysics, neurophysics and mathematical physics, addressing questions that lie at the very frontiers of fundamental knowledge.
