Soliciting Applications and Advertising your Program

The Institute advertises its programs by sending posters to all PhD granting institutions in the United States, as well as to national laboratories, industrial laboratories and research centers abroad, inviting scientists to apply to participate. However, it is essential to go beyond this general announcement. You will need to bring your program to the attention of scientists who may have a particular interest in these activities, generally through an e-mailing of your own or by contacting list-serves or calendar websites relevant to your sub-field. We will also send an e-mail announcement about the program to participants in past KITP programs in related fields. The Program Manager will assist you in this process.

The KITP strongly encourages the participation of women and minorities in its programs. This is the responsibility of all coordinators, but please keep the coordinator responsible for ensuring diversity informed of your efforts. We will expect a brief report of these efforts and results before issuing the bulk of your invitations.

We strongly urge you to contact personally, at the earliest possible date, those individuals you hope will be key participants in your programs. The "For Visitors" pages of our website provide helpful logistical information about arranging visits. KITP will make every effort to help you recruit participants for long visits. If someone balks at committing to a long stay, it's often helpful to ask, "What could we do to make this happen?" Please refer these individuals to the Deputy Director or Program Manager so that we can assist. Often, potential participants are unaware of the resources we can offer. These may include:

Please note that graduate students may not apply unless they will complete their PhDs prior to the start of the program.
