5. In the left menu box scroll down and select "HP". In the right menu box scroll down and choose "<driver name>". Make sure you choose the PS driver and not the PCS one. It may take a minute for the printer to be added.

To set up your Windows XP/2000 laptop for printing using LPR, follow the instructions in this pdf. *Please follow every step of these instructions before contacting Help.

To set up your Windows 98/ME laptop for printing, follow the instructions below.

1. Double click the network icon in the control panel window. Click on the Configuration tab; make sure that NetBEUI and Client for Microsoft Network services are installed there.

2. Click on the Identification tab and enter KITP in the Workgroup field.

3. Open the Network Neighborhood icon (usually on your desktop) and look for the KITP subnet. Open it and you will find two computers named prtsrv2.  If you don't find anything, right click on the network neighborhood icon on your desktop and select find computer. Then search for "prtsrv2".

4. Once you find it, double click on it and the resources that it shares will become available to you. Some icons will appear in the window, three of which will be printers.

5. Drag the icons to your desktop. Windows will say you can't do that, but give you the option to make shortcuts. Make shortcuts.

Now the proper drivers have to be installed on your computer and that is the most critical step. Insert the HP installer disk in the CDROM drive. This disk can be obtained by sending email to "help@kitp.ucsb.edu".

You can also find the HP printer drivers on the HP website.

Go through the entire installation process. Now you are ready to print.

NOTE: Because you are not going through a UNIX printing queue, your jobs will not show up on an lpq listing and it will also not have a KITP cover page. We suggest you collect those jobs immediately.

NOTE2: Other flavors of windows print in similar ways. We prefer that you set-up printing through "prtsrv2".
