Lodging: How Does it Work?
If you will be coming for less than 3 workweeks, please go directly to short-term information.
If you are coming for three workweeks or more, please submit the Housing Information form as soon as you accept your invitation. The KITP Housing Coordinator will use the information you provide to us to determine if a suitable housing assignment can be made from the KITP inventory of rentals. While every effort is made to match visitors with suitable, low-cost housing, it is not always possible to provide a rental from the KITP inventory.
Sometimes visitors will be referred to other rental resources, such as online rental services like 'Vacation Rentals by Owner', and 'Sabbatical Homes'. In these cases, the Housing Coordinator is available to give advice and answer questions. In the event that an online rental provider asks you to wire money to secure a rental, please inform KITP. You should not wire money to a provider who is not known to -- or cannot be verified by -- us.
Because many visitors find it necessary to change their plans after requesting housing, the Housing Coordinator generally does not make specific assignments for visitors coming alone until less than one month prior to a visitor’s arrival date. Arrangements for couples and families are made as soon as possible after the Housing Information form is received. Feel free to contact the Housing Coordinator with any concerns or questions regarding the housing process or your particular housing status.
Some lodging offered from our inventory will require advance payment of a deposit and/or rent. Payments must be in the form of cash, check, traveler’s checks or cashier’s check. Credit cards cannot be used to make payments. KITP rental providers do not provide tax identification information to visitors, so if a tax ID is needed by your home institution, then you will need to use a hotel or commercial rental. KITP cannot be responsible for deposit disputes, although the Housing Coordinator will always try to assist in such cases.
- None of the KITP rental options is available if you are a smoker, or if you will have guests who smoke, or if you bring a pet. Please see the hotel information under 'short-term.' In some cases housing can be arranged for a smoker who agrees to smoke only outside, but this will be more expensive, and a housing match cannot be guaranteed.
- Most KITP rentals are not suitable for colleagues who wish to share housing. Visitors who want to share must generally use online listing resources. Also, the KITP Housing Coordinator cannot assist with making matches among visitors who wish to share a rental.
-
KITP rental assignments are generally finalized quite close to the start of the program. Once it has been confirmed that housing in this category is available for you, you may proceed to make your travel arrangements, even if the specific assignment has not yet been made. If you have concerns regarding this, please contact the Housing Coordinator.
