Prospective KITP visitors often ask about:

WHEN WILL I HEAR from KITP about my housing?

Program participants coming with family members should complete the housing questionnaire as soon as they know the approximate dates of their visits.  Precisely when you will be contacted depends on many factors, but if you have not heard from Monica Curry, our Housing Coordinator, within a couple of weeks of submitting the form, then you should call her at 805-893-6346.  Similar advice pertains if you have special needs, such as wheelchair access.

Participants coming alone for 18 days or longer should also complete the housing questionnaire at least one month before scheduled arrival.  You are likely to be offered several alternatives, such as a room in a private home in the area.  (These rooms typically run $32-$40 per day. )  The highest priority is for those people coming for lengthy visits, so you may well not hear until a few weeks before you come.   Participants coming alone should not wait to hear before making their travel plans.  Their lodging needs will be met somehow.

In any case, since our inventory and choices are limited, especially for families, we encourage you to explore rental listings on the internet.  Some of them are listed on our online rental agencies page .  As you look through these listings, if you have questions regarding neighborhoods, price ranges, transportation, etc., please send a message or call the KITP Housing Coordinator.

SHARED HOUSING

There are very few rentals suitable for sharing, especially for shorter visits. If you will be at KITP for a period of two or more months, and wish to share a house or condominium with a specific program participant, that can sometimes be arranged.

WALKING DISTANCE

The UCSB campus is located such that the only housing within walking distance are a very small number of university owned family apartments. We must give priority for these to visitors with spouses and families. The next closest housing possibilities are rooms in private homes scattered in a 3 mile radius of campus (although we sometimes have use of a room in a house in Isla Vista). Many include use of a bike. Most other rentals, including any kind of a guest cottage or condominium, are really not practical without use of a car. The only exception is a very small number of houses, condominiums, and guest¹ apartments that become available within bicycling distance in Goleta.

QUIET!

The most quiet rentals are "guest" cottages and apartments that are 7 miles or farther from campus and have limited cooking facilities. Occasionally we get use of a (quiet) private apartment closer to campus, but there is less chance of one of these being available for short visits (of less than 2 months).

SMOKING

None of the KITP rentals will allow smoking inside. One will accept smokers who will smoke outside only.

PETS

Pets are not allowed in any of the furnished apartment complexes in the community, nor in any campus housing. Rarely are they permitted by owners offering their homes for rent. Bringing a pet will drastically reduce your rental choices. We ask, therefore, that you leave your pets behind in good care.

MAILING ADDRESS

We suggest that you do not have mail sent to your rental (unless you will be here for 4 to 6 months). Please refer to the "visit info" link on the KITP homepage for information about mail and addresses.

SCHOOL INFORMATION

The school your child would attend depends upon the area in which your rental is located. There are web sites for local schools.

For information about all elementary schools, high schools and special education programs, go to:

To go directly to the web pages for the elementary schools see: Public schools in the Goleta/Santa Barbara area are well-regarded and free. There is no need to enroll your child before arrival. You will need to bring birth records, school records, and immunization records. Remedial programs are available at all schools for children experiencing learning difficulties. A special program is available for children with severe disabilities. Local schools are experienced with non English-speaking students who speak Spanish, but do accommodate children who speak other languages.
