Announcement

The 6th Theoretical Astrophysics in Southern California (TASC) Meeting will be held on Friday, October 20, 2006 at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP), which is located on the University of California campus in Santa Barbara (UCSB). The purpose of this annual meeting is to bring together the theoretical astrophysics community in the Southern California region. The meeting is designed to be an informal venue in which people can get to know one another and become familiar with the broad range of research conducted in our geographic area. Postdocs and graduate students are especially encouraged to attend. This is an open meeting and there will be no registration fee. There will be no plenary talks. Instead, all participants, and especially postdocs and graduate students, are invited to contribute talks on their current research. We will allot equal time to everyone who requests to speak. The duration of each talk will be about 10 minutes.

As in previous TASC meetings, we hope to have broad participation from the Southern California astrophysics theory community. All astrophysics theorists are invited---particularly postdocs and graduate students. As we'd like to keep the meeting small, we are specifically not inviting observers and experimenters.

For your reference, the webpages of the previous TASC meetings can be found below.

We look forward to seeing you!

Talks

The meeting will follow an informal format. There will be no plenary talks. Instead, all participants, especially postdocs and graduate students, are invited to contribute talks on their current research. Unless we are overwhelmed with speakers, we will allot equal time to everyone who requests to speak, and we will not have parallel sessions. We anticipate the duration of each talk to be about 10 minutes, and expect the meeting to run from about 9am-5pm. There will be no printed proceedings, but those who wish may post their talks to this website after the meeting.

The meeting will take place in the Auditorium of the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, located in Kohn Hall on the University of California, Santa Barbara campus. Overhead and laptop projectors will be available. It is likely that we will ask speakers to send us their talks as a .pdf or .ppt file so that we can use a single laptop to display the presentations.

Registration

There will be no registration fee, and the organizers are unable to provide financial support to participants. Refreshments will be provided at coffee breaks, and there will be a catered lunch in the KITP courtyard. .

The registration deadline is October 16, 2006.
To facilitate our preparations, we ask participants to register as soon as possible! Even if you don't yet know your talk title, please register, and notify us that you will want to give a talk. You can register at our:

Alternatively, registration information can be sent to Marc Favata by email (tasc06{at}gmail.com). Let us know your name, institutional affiliation, and the title of your talk (if you intend to give one). Also let us know if you are a student, and hence eligible for the student prize.

For those of you who have already registered and intend to give a talk, but haven't yet given us a title, please send us the title by October 16 (email the title along with your name to tasc06{at}gmail.com).

Dinner

Following the meeting, there will be a dinner at 7pm at El Paseo, a Mexican restaurant in downtown Santa Barbara. We expect the dinner to cost approximately $20-30 per person. Please indicate whether or not you will make it to the dinner when registering - an accurate headcount will greatly facilitate our preparations.

Lodging and Parking

Although this will be a one day meeting, those coming from reasonable distances may prefer to stay overnight near the UCSB campus. A block of 30 rooms has been reserved at the nearby Best Western South Coast Inn at the KITP rate of $113 per night (+ tax = 124.30) for the dates Oct. 19-21. Please contact the hotel directly to make reservations (1-800-350-3614); to ensure the special rate, please don't forget to mention the meeting (TASC) when calling. The rooms will be held until October 1.

Other local hotel options can be found here. Further information about visiting Santa Barbara can be found on the KITP Visitor Information Page.

The TASC is not an "official" KITP event, however, so please do not contact any of the KITP staff; send all inquiries to Marc Favata, or directly to the hotel.

Directions (coming from the south): Take 101 N to Santa Barbara. Take the UCSB exit (Hwy 217). This drops you on to a short stretch of highway, which ends at the East gate to UCSB. The KITP (located in Kohn Hall) is the building to the left. You can find a campus map here. Here is a map of the Santa Barbara area, with the locations of the KITP and Best Western marked. In addition, here is a more detailed map of the area surrounding the University.

To find parking when you arrive, turn right at the East gate onto Mesa Road. Continue along Mesa Rd. until the intersection with Ocean Road and turn left. The closest parking is in Lot 16 or the Mesa Parking Structure. If those are filled further parking can be found by continuing on Ocean Rd to Lots 21 and 27. To park on campus you will need to purchase a permit from one of the dispensers located in the lots. Visitors should park only in those lots or structures indicated with a "C" on the above campus map or the yellow areas in this parking map.

Student Prize

A prize will be awarded for the best talk by a student at the meeting.
