Santa Barbara Advanced School of QBio - Summer Course Application

This interdisciplinary course is open to postdocs and advanced graduate students with Physical, Mathematical, Life Science, or Engineering backgrounds. Prior experience in the subject of the course is not necessary, but demonstrated scholastic excellence and research experience will be preferred. Applicants are requested to provide (via an online form) a CV/publication list plus a "personal statement" letter explaining i) why they are interested in the course and how they expect to benefit from it; ii) their preparation for the course. Each application must be supported by two letters of recommendation by uploaded electronically at One letter must be from the applicant's research supervisor. Admission letters will be sent by April 1, 2018.

Course Description


  • Lodging and 14-meal plan $1250 (shared bedroom), $2000 (single bedroom). Lodging will be in the Santa Ynez student apartments on the UCSB campus. Each apartment has two bedrooms, each with two sets of bunk beds, one full and one half bathroom, a kitchen, and a living room. Payments must be submitted by July 1.

Preferred Project

Each admitted student will work on a 4-week group project on one of the topics listed in the course description. We will attempt to assign every participant to one of their top-ranked projects.
