LAS CUMBRES OBSERVATORY TRAINING SESSION

The KITP is pleased to offer a special opportunity for up to 35 teachers on Sunday March 18, 2007, the day following the Teacher's Conference. Las Cumbres Observatory will provide a day of training that will equip teachers to use the LCOGT network of telescopes to assist in research based learning activities in the classroom.

Teachers will use computer software to develop skills in image processing and analysis, in order to produce supernovae light curves and measure variations in the brightness of stars that have possible extra-solar planets. In addition, teachers will have the chance to learn how Near Earth Object astrometry is carried out, and even have a go at producing "Hubble Space Telescope type" images from real telescope data. Opportunities to discuss possible teaching strategies for classroom-based activities will be provided throughout the day. Software will be provided, and laptops will be available during the session.

This event will be held at the South Coast Inn in the Enterprise Room starting at 8:30 AM. The morning session will be a complete description of what is needed in the classroom to take advantage of the existing network for classroom use. Following lunch will be an additional in-depth session on data reduction and image processing that will end by 4:00 PM.

This is designed as a full-day event; however, recognizing that some participants may need to leave after lunch in order to catch flights for the east coast, the morning session will be a self-contained unit and will provide a complete training module.

The Observatory will provide Sunday lunch for those who participate in either the am-only or the full-day session.   The Observatory will also cover the cost of an additional hotel night (BWSCI only) for those full-day participants who need to stay over an additional night in order to participate.

Space is limited to 35 participants.  In order to participate, you must register by email to Jocelyn by January 23 and indicate either "am-only" or "full-day" in your message.  We will notify you as soon as possible regarding your acceptance.
