Printing

The KITP has laser printers available on both floors and in three distinct locations.  All laser printers offer a duplex option allowing double sided printing (please print double-sided to save paper).

Laptop Printing Setup

To set up your laptop to print on the KITP printers, follow the instructions below. Note - a list of printer queue names, models, and locations is listed above which you will need when choosing which printer to use. We use Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) which simplifies printing setup.

Windows  

1. Control Panel > Printers > Add Printer > Network Printer > And manually enter the http address below:

http://prtsrv.kitp.ucsb.edu:631/printers/lw2202

2. Add the appropriate driver - in this case "HP Laserjet 9040 DN"

3. Click save, and test the printer.

4. For other printers, substitute from the table above (eg lw2202 -> lw1018). Remember to use the corresponding driver (eg. "HP Laserjet 9050DN")

Linux  

Red Hat Linux: (there will be variations based on the specific flavour of Linux)

  1. Start the Printer Configuration utility usually located at Start/Applications/PrinterConfiguration or the System menu.
  2. Click on the New icon (for adding a new printer).
  3. Enter the desired queue name from our list.
  4. Set the queue type to Unix printer.
  5. To configure the remote lpd server, enter prtsrv2 for the server name and set the queue name the same as in step 3.
  6. Next choose the printer driver type as Postscript Printer.
  7. Click Finish.
  8. Restart the printing services daemon on your laptop (usually when you click finish it prompts for a restart).
  9. Check progress of printing with the command "lpq -P<queuename>"
    (see the queuenames above).
