Is There a Galactic Fog?
The next Café KITP at SOhO features Mike McCourt. Join him over dinner and drinks as he discusses gas clouds in the darkest reaches of galaxies and explains how they can be understood as a cosmic analog of fog. The event is on Wednesday, October 19, 2016, 6-7pm. Doors open at 5:00 pm.
Cosmic Connection
KITP’s Greg Huber worked with nuclear physicists to confirm a structural similarity found in both human cells and neutron stars.
Stellar Simulators
Astrophysicists Matteo Cantiello and Yan-Fei Jiang at KITP will use a supercomputer to explore the driving forces behind mass loss in massive stars. The pair have been awarded 120 million CPU hours over two years on the supercomputer Mira — the sixth-fastest computer in the world — through the Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment (INCITE) program, an initiative of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science.
