Emergency Procedures
Campus Safety
For emergencies, please dial 9-1-1. To contact police for non-emergency situations, call the Campus Police Dispatch at 805-893-3446. Please also notify KITP's Chief Administrative Officer or the Director, as soon as it is safe for you to do so.
The Campus Safety Officer (CSO) Escort Service can be reached by calling the Police Dispatch Escort Phone Line at 805-893-2000. We encourage everyone to use this service whenever they feel uncomfortable or unsafe walking or biking alone. CSOs are equipped with digital radios which allow them to be in constant contact with the Police Dispatch and Police Officers.

Parking
Short-Term Parking
Lot 10 is very convenient to KITP. We generally discourage driving to campus if you are here for a conference or as a program speaker--daily rates for campus parking are $8-10 per day, and some recommended hotels offer shuttles. On the 5th Floor ONLY, a VIP pass for KITP visitors to purchase at $10/day. VIP passes may be purchased for a single or several days. Do NOT use the parking permit machine in Lot 10 to buy a 'daily permit' on a weekday (unless you have a handicapped plackard and will be parking in a handicapped space). You will get a ticket! For four hours or less, you can buy an hourly "coastal" permit and park in designated first-floor stalls.
Weekly and Monthly Passes
To buy a monthly permit visit the UCSB Transportation and Parking Services office and ask to buy a staff pass as a visitor to KITP. Please visit the campus parking website for more information.
With this pass you can park in Lot 30, and Lot 10, which is next to Kohn Hall, but not in the parking lot outside the Munger Phyiscs Residence.
Coffee/Water
Cookies, coffee, and tea are served in the Commons Room at 3:15 p.m. every day during the school year. The kitchens must be maintained by all who use them. Please help keep the kitchens neat by cleaning up after all coffee and meal preparation.
ESPRESSO - There is an espresso machine, located in the Commons Room, on the first floor. Espresso is available to KITP scientists only for $1.00/bag (2 cartridges) from the Visitor Services Assistant in room 1102.
DRINKING WATER - A water dispenser is located upstairs across from the elevator.
Sending and Receiving Mail
The mail room can be opened with your mail room key. Mail is received and sent out once each day at approximately 8:15 a.m. Fed Ex items usually are received and picked up throughout the day, but all requests for pickup must be phoned in before 3 p.m. Professional mail should bear the KITP return address and the name of the sender.
The University requests that personal mail, even though it is stamped, not be mailed through the campus mail, but rather be placed in a U.S. mailbox. There is a mailbox across the service road on the west side of the KITP by ENG I and the MRL and a U.S. Post Office downstairs at the University Center.
If you will need to have business mail forwarded to you, please use the following address:

Laptops
We encourage visitors to bring their laptops to facilitate their stay at the KITP. When requested, we can provide LCD screens (approx 23") to connect to laptops. We also provide both wired and wireless access to the network.
Given limited staff time and resources, and given that each laptop has a unique combination of hardware, software and configuration, our assistance with laptops is limited to providing information on getting the most common platforms to connect to the KITP network. Before leaving your home institution, you should ensure that your laptop has all the required software and is appropriately configured.
If you have any questions about your laptop or this policy, please check with us before arriving at the KITP.
Printing
The KITP has laser printers available on both floors - in rooms 2202 and 1018. We use Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) so you can easily print to KITP printers. All laser printers offer a duplex option allowing double sided printing. Please print double-sided to save paper and don’t send multiple copies to the queue - contact the help desk first if you have problems.
Read our guide to set up your laptop to print on the KITP printers.
Scanning
Scanning can be done via the main copy machine which is located in the downstairs copy/print room (1018).

Network access
Wi-Fi network access is available in Kohn Hall. If you are visiting from an eduoroam participating institution, you may select eduroam as your Wi-Fi network on your device and login using your home institution’s credentials. Alternatively, you may connect to the KITP Wi-Fi network, please see your Welcome Packet for details.
If you prefer wired Ethernet access, please contact the Help Desk. Set your computer to use DHCP (auto-detect); you may have to contact the help desk to activate the port.
Please read our policy before connecting your laptop to the network. The University of California abides by the DMCA and our networks are scanned for material which may be in violation of the DMCA. When we are served with notices of suspected violations, we are obliged to request removal of the material in question from the network. Primarily this means copyrighted movies and music which have been downloaded from the internet. If you might have such material on your laptop, please contact the Help Desk connecting your laptop to the network.
Remote collaboration and teaching
The KITP has several self-service rooms dedicated for remote collaboration and teaching, via Zoom or any other remote collaboration software. We have one room with a large TV for users to connect their laptop, along with a small conference table for 3 or 4 people, and a blackboard. A webcam can be provided, although laptop webcams are usually sufficient. If you plan to use the blackboard, you may want to consider using a wireless headset or AirPods. Contact the help desk if you have any questions.
Reservations can be scheduled at the room's door, or at the KITP front desk.
