Information for your stay at the Munger Physics Residence
Welcome to your stay at the Munger Residence, please review the Resident Handbook, as well as the Arrival and Living information below.
Arriving at Munger Residence
The Munger Residence address is 6560 El Colegio Road, Goleta, CA 93117, just east of Los Carneros Road. This is not a mailing address. KITP will be billed directly for your housing. Google Maps will show the location as “KITP Residence”.
Please review our Transportation page to view more information.
From Los Angeles International Airport:
We recommend the Santa Barbara Airbus, particularly if you must return to LAX for your departing flight. The Airbus is reliable, and offers a reasonable round-trip fare. The nearest Airbus drop-off point to the Residence is the Goleta terminal at 750 Technology Drive; so once you arrive, you'll need to call a taxi or ride service to the Residence.
If you plan on arriving after 10:00 PM (Pacific Standard Time), you will be given a one-time-only entry code to the building. This will expire after it is used. You must request the code in advance of your arrival in order to access the building after the front desk has closed.
When you arrive to the Residence, please be dropped off at 6560 El Colegio Road, Goleta, CA 93117. There is limited short term parking for loading and unloading only. If you bring a car, you may park in Lot 30 with a purchased permit.
Parking
If you arrive on a weekend, we would suggest buying a pass from the machine in front of the Residence building. One can buy a pass for up to 7 days to park in front of the Residence.
For longer term parking, the lot for the building is Lot 30, which is a few blocks from the Residence. To buy a permit to park in Lot 30, go into the Parking Office (also in Lot 30) and buy a staff pass as a visitor to KITP. You must buy a permit to park on campus. Please visit the campus parking website for more information: http://www.tps.ucsb.edu/parking-permits.
With this pass you can park in Lot 30, and Lot 10, which is next to Kohn Hall.
Check-in and Keys
We are staffed from:
8:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Monday through Friday
12:00 PM to 10:00 PM on weekends.
Once you enter, please check in with staff at the desk, or if arriving late, please find the envelope on the front desk with your name on it to receive your key.
If you plan on arriving after 10:00 PM, use the given one-time-only entry code to enter the building. This will expire after it is used.
We have designed the residence to be your home for your stay. All apartments are fully furnished, including dishes, cookware, and linens. All beds are king-sized. Cribs and high chairs are also available. The residence is located just off campus, about 1.5 miles away. Indoor bike parking is also available. No bikes are allowed in the building.
Date Change
Please be aware that if your arrival or departure date is changed shortly before, or during, your visit, we may not be able to house you. Changes made less than one month before arrival can result in housing being unavailable for your visit
What to bring with you
Your apartment is fully furnished, including all kitchen items. We only ask that you provide your own food and consumable products, such as personal and laundry soaps and paper goods. Your unit will have a starting supply of shampoo, personal soap, toilet paper and paper towels, as well as a small bit of food to get you through your first night!
Your apartment is your home. We will provide you with all cleaning products to keep your own space clean (no cleaning or laundry service is offered). We respect your privacy and will not enter your unit unless called for by repairs or maintenance.
Laundry
Laundry machines are available for free in the Basement. We ask that you provide your own soaps and detergents. For those staying in the seven bedrooms, the laundry is in your unit.
Water
There are reverse osmosis faucets and ice machines in the Prep Kitchen, First Floor Lounge, and Basement Lounge.
Bike Storage
All bikes must be stored in the Bike Storage room, as should surfboards or other items from the beach. The shower in that space is to help you remove additional sand, and we also have 'tar-off' available should you find tar on your feet from the beach. Santa Barbara has a number of natural tar seeps. We make these efforts to keep the Residence in excellent condition, as both tar and bikes in the building lead to substantial damage.
Children
Our first priority is to provide a comfortable environment for visitors and their families. We have a children’s play area designed for children aged 10 and below. We also have music rooms, foosball, and table tennis areas as well. Be aware that children are not to be within common spaces of the building in an unsupervised manner. We provide the common spaces for all of our visitors, and unsupervised children place a burden on both the visitors and our staff who feel obliged to then either correct behavior or be concerned about safety of the
unsupervised child.
Pets
The Munger Residence and all KITP housing does not allow pets. If you plan to bring a pet, you will need to find your own housing.
Smoking
Smoking is not permitted in the KITP Residence, in any units, common areas, or grounds, or outside of the complex. UCSB is s smoke free campus. Failure to comply will result in dismissal from the Residence.
You will not be able to receive mail at your residence address. Mail sent to your unit will be returned to the sender. You will have a mail box at Kohn Hall, which can also receive packages for you.

About the Munger Physics Residence
This facility, which has been fully funded for construction and furnishings by Charles T. Munger, houses up to 61 KITP participants in a comfortable and intimate setting that promotes informal discussions and extends the collaborative interactions that are the hallmark of KITP’s mission. KITP visitors not staying at the Residence will have access to the common areas, as will KITP postdocs, graduate fellows, and scientific staff.
With tall ceilings, thick walls, and generous proportions, all spaces within the Residence are designed for the activities that will occur; whether it be late-night science at the blackboard, barbecuing and dining together for program events, or playing with your children in the west yard or children’s play room. These common areas also include music practice rooms with three pianos, a number of open lounges, a Snooker room, and ping-pong tables. Wireless access is available throughout the facility, including the exterior.
Housing at the residence consists of one-, two-, and seven-bedroom apartments, all with king-sized beds, private baths, guest baths, and fully furnished living and dining rooms. All have full kitchens equipped with stainless steel appliances, coffee maker, dishwasher, and granite countertops. All necessary cookware, dishes, and silverware are included. A washer and dryer are available in each seven-bedroom suite, while other apartments share a large laundry room in the basement. There is also a fully equipped fitness center in the basement.
One-bedroom apartments are excellent for a single long-term visitor, a couple, or a couple with an infant in a crib. These have a private bedroom, two large work desks, a furnished living/dining room, a kitchen, and one bath.
Two-bedroom apartments are optimized for families, with each bedroom having a private bath, plus an extra half bath for guests. Some two-bedroom apartments also have an extra study that could accommodate a short-term family guest or serve as a place for children to do their homework. Each bedroom has a large work desk. A full kitchen is adjacent to the living/dining room space.
Seven-bedroom suites have seven private bedrooms, each with a private bath and a large work desk in the bedroom. These all share a very large living/dining room area (including a blackboard) and a double-sized kitchen with two stoves and two refrigerators. There is also a small meeting room adjacent to the kitchen with an additional blackboard and a large working table. Laundry is available within the suite, and a guest bathroom is available for visitors to the suite.
Each visitor will receive a welcome basket to ease the first day of arrival. Groceries are available at the nearby Isla Vista Food Co-op grocery store, while Costco, Albertson's grocery store, restaurants, and other big box stores are a short bus ride away via MTD line 28, with a stop just outside the Residence. The beach is a 15-minute walk, and the Residence has space in the bike room for storage of wetsuits and other beach materials. The frequent MTD express bus 24X also allows you to reach downtown Santa Barbara in less than 25 minutes.
A photo of the East entrance to the Charles T. Munger Physics Residence, a three story, 75,000 square foot facility that houses KITP visitors. Common space inside and outside allows for continued scientific interactions for the nearly thousand scientists who come to the KITP every year for programs in all of theoretical physics.

KITP Residence LEED Specifications
One of the most popular types of rentals that we have are rooms for rent in private homes for $38/$50 per day (there is a minimum rental payment for periods of 21 days or less). Most are not in walking distance, but they are often in bicycling distance (3 to 4 miles), and the landlords sometimes (not always) provide bikes. (If a bike is not provided, one can be rented at a reasonable cost.) Most are also accessible by city bus. Some landlords rent only one room; some rent to more than one visitor at a time. Most rooms in private homes are not suitable for “overnight guests,” including spouses. None are suitable for dinner parties or other such gatherings.
These rentals provide a room with a bed and often a desk. Also included are linens, towels and most (but not all) include access to the kitchen and laundry facilities. Please be aware that rooms in private homes are suitable for light cooking, not lots of serious cooking or cooking late at night.
The rental provider will not wash dishes, provide rides for shopping or to the campus or airport, or to do your laundry or cook for visitors. If you prefer to have cleaning services, you should use a full-service hotel, not a room in a private home.
Most (but not all) include use of a telephone; you pay long distance charges. Most room rental providers ask that you use a calling card or credit card for long distance calls. Prepaid calling cards can be purchased at the UCSB bookstore. Some, but not all, provide internet access. We cannot guarantee an assignment that includes internet access.
Some providers also ask for a deposit of about $100, to be held until the phone bill arrives and shows no long distance charges. If you are coming from overseas, and cashing a U.S. check is a problem, then the deposit can be given in the form of a cashier’s or traveler’s check to be held uncashed and returned to you when appropriate.
There is a minimum rental payment required for any period of 21 days or less. It is expected that rent will be paid upon arrival for at least the first month (unless the minimum is applicable).FOR VISITS OF LESS THAN TWO MONTHS (e.g. 45 days), YOU MUST PLAN TO PAY THE ENTIRE RENT WHEN YOU ARRIVE (in the form of cashiers check or travelers checks - cash is OK but we do not recommend that you travel with cash). These are individual private homeowners, who cannot accept a credit card for payment.
NOTE: KITP rental providers do not provide tax identification numbers to renters. If you are expecting reimbursement from your home institution, please check whether a tax ID number will be required for this. If it is, then you will need to rent something that is not in the KITP rental inventory.
Note that you are expected to pay for the dates indicated on your housing request. If you shorten your visit, then you are expected to pay the rent for the dates you gave, unless the Housing Coordinator can replace you with another renter. If your visit is extended (and there is space for you), then additional rent will be paid by you.
The owners of these rooms have typically rented to KITP folks for many years, and the people who have used them have seemed to like them very much. We generally do not have rooms (or other rentals) within walking distance. However, most are close to bike paths and bus stops, making for easy travel to UCSB. Some, however, are farther away in Santa Barbara, making a car more convenient for travel.
"Guest quarters" consist of privately owned rental units scattered throughout the area. There are different types, as described below. Most have been rented primarily to KITP visitors for several years.
"Guest cottages" are smaller, separate units, either ‘studio’ style, or with a bedroom, living area, bathroom, and a kitchenette. The kitchenette can be part of the living area or behind folding doors. A kitchenette may have a stove, but usually has just a microwave, coffee maker, small refrigerator and a sink area. "Guest apartments" are similar, but are attached to the main house or garage.
Guest units are generally a bit farther from campus and sometimes require the use of a car. Prices range from about $1,600 (not too many of these, and not always the best quality) to $2,600 per month. Guest units suitable for housing couples or for hosting overnight guests will cost more than those suitable for a single person.
Some units have special amenities, such as views. All guest quarters are fully furnished, including linens, towels and dishes. Some, but not all, have a telephone. Very few have TV. Some, but not all, have internet access. We cannot guarantee an assignment that includes internet access.
Guest units are generally not available for less than a full month's rental.
FOR VISITS OF LESS THAN TWO MONTHS (e.g.
**Note: If you indicated ‘No’ to the smoking question on your housing application then it is expected that you do not smoke at all, even outside your housing. Rental providers with non-smoking rentals do not want the smell of smoke on renters’ clothes, or smoking materials discarded in or around their rental. If you did indicate ‘no’ to smoking, and then you do smoke, you will be asked to move out immediately, probably to a hotel or motel.
Please also be aware that Santa Barbara and Goleta (including the UCSB campus) are located in a relatively moist seaside area, adjacent to brush-covered mountains. Virtually no KITP rental will be completely free of small creatures, such as spiders, ants, or the occasional beetle or even a mouse. Local residents tend to be quite environmentally conscious, and very few will use, or allow use of, pesticide sprays in their homes. They will use a mouse trap when needed, or clean surfaces to eliminate ant trails, etc. But if you require a really 'bug-free' environment, then you may need to consider using a hotel or motel instead of a private rental.
KITP has a very limited number of houses and condominiums available for couples and families who will be here for at least one month or more. These are not always available, but visitors can indicate that they would prefer one if available. Sometimes KITP has information about sabbatical rentals, but these are generally offered for longer periods of 5 to 12 months. The cost for houses and condominiums is generally in the range of $2400 to $3800 per month. Most houses and condominiums are not offered to unrelated adults wishing to share a rental. Visitors wishing to share a rental must generally use online listing resources.
KITP Units in Graduate Student Apartment Complexes
A limited number of campus apartments can be offered to visitors coming with family. KITP cannot guarantee an assignment to one of these units to all visitors with families, since we have only a limited number of them.
KITP has the use of a limited number of UCSB West Campus graduate student one-bedroom apartments, about 1 and 1/4 mile from KITP/Kohn Hall.
The West Campus units are close to campus (about 1.5 mile from KITP) in a complex intended primarily for graduate students with families. It is within 3/4 mile walking distance of shopping, and close to the bikepath to campus. This complex is also next to a wildlife refuge and 3/4 mile from the beach.
There is one parking space for each unit in an open air parking lot - no covered parking is available. There is no charge for the residential parking permit (get this permit when you check into the apartment upon arrival), however, there *is* a fee for parking on the UCSB campus - see our website for more details:
https://www.kitp.ucsb.edu/visitors/during-your-visit/ucsb
All these units are one bedroom units. Some are upstairs with a small deck, the others are downstairs with a small patio. All units face a pleasant open common space, with lawn and trees. Which type of unit is available depends on your dates and which units are already booked.
The units have one bedroom, one bath (with combination tub/shower), a fully equipped (small) kitchen, living room (no TV) and a phone. High speed internet access is provided by the UCSB Communications 'ResNet' service. Wireless internet is not currently offered in these units. Wireless is being added soon.
There is a queen bed in the bedroom and a queen-size sofa bed in the living room. A folding crib is provided for babies. Also provided are bureaus, dining table, and lamps. Kitchens have a microwave oven and coffeemaker. There is a laundry room in the complex with credit/debit card operated machines. The units are clean and serviceable and are fully furnished with linens for the beds and crib, towels, cooking gear, dishes, etc. Housekeeping is not provided - visitors are expected to keep their unit clean and to regularly launder the bed linens and towels that they use.
Note that pets of any kind are NOT allowed in any campus housing.
Some information about units at West Campus can be found at:
http://www.housing.ucsb.edu/residences/west-campus
*However*, the descriptions and prices on this page refer to *unfurnished* units, offered only to graduate students. The KITP units are fully furnished, and rent is as below:
As of July 1, 2014, the rent is $46.78 per day (rent is paid for both the day you arrive and the day you depart). No rent or deposit is due upon arrival (see below for more detail on why a deposit is not required). Rent can be paid at any time via cash, personal check, or money order. Visitors who are getting a reimbursement check will have their rent deducted from their reimbursement and paid by KITP.
Internet:
The KITP West Campus Family Student Housing units do not have wireless internet access. High speed internet access is available through UCSB ResNet, using a modem and ethernet cable, which are kept stored in a plastic box, usually on a shelf in one of the closets. No password is needed to access the ResNet service.
For more information about ResNet, please visit their website at:
http://www.housing.ucsb.edu/resnet
For telephone information, including rates see the Communications Services website at: http://www.commserv.ucsb.edu/residents/default.asp
Television:
The units are “cable ready” if you should wish to contract for cable TV service. The Residence Manager can explain how to do this and how to rent a television.
Telephone:
Please be aware that the phones in the FSH units are maintained and paid for by KITP. We receive the phone bills about 2 months in arrears (e.g., the bill for January would be received in March). We pay the bill and then forward it to you for reimbursement. If you prefer to pay your bills before you leave here, then you should use a calling card for your long-distance calls. You can then just pay the basic service fee before you leave and not worry about long-distance calls. Also, many calling cards will offer a less expensive rate than the UCSB residential phones.
The telephone service in the KITP FSH Campus apartments are 'measured rate' phone lines. Visitors should *not* use their apartment telephone line for internet access – if they do so they will accumulate a large phone bill!
For information about after-school programs and childcare, please see the KITP Childcare page. There is also a playground for children.
These apartment units are primarily designed for one and two year occupancy by UCSB students with families. Although the WC management allows us to rent on a daily basis, the complex is managed as an apartment complex, not as a hotel. There is no maid service or weekend/after-hours desk service. We have prevailed upon WC management to eliminate the deposit requirement for KITP visitors.
In order to preserve the "no-deposit" policy, KITP visitors must keep the unit clean. The unit must be vacuumed periodically. Spills must be immediately cleaned up, especially on the carpet, to prevent staining. There are vacuums and brooms in a closet in each unit and other cleaning supplies can be obtained at no cost from the custodian.
The housing custodial service must check the unit a few days before your departure. They provide four hours of cleaning at no charge to get the unit ready for the next KITP visitor. Any excessive cleaning will be billed to you at an hourly rate. At a walk-through prior to your departure, you are informed whether the unit is within the four hour cleaning range, and what you must do if it is not. It is your responsibility to contact the Custodial Supervisor to arrange for this visit, no later than one week prior to your departure. You will receive a sheet with custodial contact information at check-in.
When you vacate you must strip the beds - custodial staff will launder the linens and towels for you. All dishes *must* be washed and *all* food and trash *must* be removed. Otherwise you will be billed for custodial staff to take care of these.
KITP has the use of four UCSB Storke I Campus Family Student Housing two-bedroom apartments.
The FSH Storke I units are very close to campus (about 1.25 mile, or 2.08 km from KITP) in a complex intended primarily for students with families. It is not within reasonable walking distance of grocery stores – however, the #25 bus can be taken from Storke Campus to stores on Hollister Avenue in Goleta.
There is one parking space for each unit in an open air parking lot - no covered parking is available. There is no charge for the residential parking permit (get this permit when you check into the apartment upon arrival), however, there *is* a fee for parking on the UCSB campus.
Some units are single-story at ground level, some are two-story at ground level, the rest are two-story and located upstairs above another unit. One of the units has a unit located above it. The units have two small bedrooms (in feet, 10 by 10.5 and 10 by 9), one bath, a fully equipped (small) kitchen, living room (no TV) and a phone. There is a queen bed in one bedroom, adult size twin bunk beds in the other, and a folding crib for babies. Also provided are bureaus, living room couch, dining table and lamps. Kitchens have a microwave oven and coffeemaker. There is a laundry room in the complex with credit/debit card operated machines. The units are clean and serviceable and are fully furnished with linens for the beds and crib, towels, cooking gear, dishes, etc. (Note that there is no maid or housecleaning service. Visitors are expected to keep the units clean and to regularly launder the bed linens and towels.)
Note that pets of any kind are NOT allowed in any campus housing.

You are responsible for a phone charge for basic service (about $20 per month) and long distance charges (plus tax) are billed to you. (KITP pays the phone bill when we receive it and then forwards it to you, asking you to reimburse KITP.) In order to dial out you must dial "8" first. (Further information about phone service, including rates, can be found in the telephone service information booklet provided in your FSH arrival packet, or at the UCSB Communications Services webpage at:
Internet:
The KITP Storke units now have wireless internet access through the UCSB ResNet service. Please check your information packet on arrival for password and instructions.
