Printing Configuration

The KITP has laser printers available on both floors - in rooms 2202 and 1018.  All laser printers offer a duplex option allowing double sided printing. Please print double-sided to save paper. Please don’t send multiple copies to the queue - contact the help desk first if you have problems.

Laptop Printing Setup

Above is a table of printer queue names, drivers, and locations, which you will need when choosing a printer to set up and use. To set up your laptop to print on the KITP printers, follow the instructions below. We use Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) which simplifies printing setup.

 

 Windows  

  1. Connect to the KITP network through ethernet.
  2. Press the Windows Key or Start Button, then search for "printer" and select
  3. Click Add a Printer, then The printer that I want isn't listed
  4. Select a shared printer by name and type (do not copy/paste): "http://print.kitp.ucsb.edu:631/printers/"
    • eg. http://print.kitp.ucsb.edu:631/printers/lw1018

  5. Under the manufacturer column, select HP. Under the printers column, select the corresponding printer driver: 

    • color2202: HP Color LaserJet M651 PCL 6
    • mfp2022/lw1018: HP LaserJet MFP M725 PCL 6

    If the corresponding drivers do not appear, select "Windows Update" to update the list of drivers (may take up to 5 minutes).

 Linux  

Add an IPP Printer on Linux
  1. Open your system’s Printer Configuration utility. Depending on your Linux distribution and desktop environment, this may be found in Settings, Applications, or the System Menu.
  2. Select Add Printer or click the New / Add icon.
  3. Choose Network Printer, then select IPP (Internet Printing Protocol).
  4. Enter the following information:
    • Host name: print.kitp.ucsb.edu/printers
    • Queue name: Select the appropriate queue name from the table above.
  5. When prompted to select a driver, choose Select Printer from Database. If available, select the appropriate printer model or IPP Everywhere for a driverless configuration.
  6. Enable Duplex if you would like double-sided printing.
  7. Click Finish or Add to complete the setup.

These are general instructions and may vary depending on your Linux distribution and desktop environment. If you need distribution-specific instructions, please look up how to add an IPP printer for your version of Linux, or visit Room 2202 or 1104 for further assistance.
 

 Mac OS 

  1. Click on the Apple logo on the top left corner on your laptop and select System Preferences or System Settings.
  2. Select Printers & Scanners and click the + button to add a new printer.
  3. Click the IP tab, and then enter the address: print.kitp.ucsb.edu
  4. For Protocol, select Internet Printing Protocol (IPP).
  5. For Queue and Name, enter the queue name for the printer in the format: 
    • printers/<queuename> 
    • For example: printers/lw1018, printers/color2202, or printers/mfp2202 (see table for the correct queue name).
  6. For Use, choose Select Software…, then select Generic PostScript Printer.
  7. Select Duplex Unit (double-sided) then click OK to finish adding the printer.
