KITP Fellows

The KITP Fellows program award supports a single long visit of 6-8 weeks. All applicants must be active ladder faculty (assistant, associate or full professors) at non-R1 Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) with an undergraduate major in physics or astronomy. Applicants can be experimentalists, observers or theorists in physics or astronomy departments, and adjacent interdisciplinary fields, at non-R1 teaching-intensive U.S. colleges and universities, which are also designated as MSIs.

Each award will fund travel to and from KITP, and the local accommodation expenses for a single contiguous stay of 6-8 weeks. Additionally, to allow KITP Fellows to be away for an extended period, a taxable honorarium of $2,000/week (up to $16,000 total) is provided. Approximately 5-7 Fellows will be selected each year, with the cohort present during the 2025-26 academic year.

Faculty interested in applying as a KITP Fellow for the approximate period of July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026 may apply via the "Apply" button at herald.kitp.ucsb.edu. Potential Fellows should first review the upcoming KITP research programs to determine the best time for a proposed visit that will connect with their research interests.

The application will allow upload or entry of key materials needed for selection, and the opportunity to indicate preferred visit dates. Required materials from the applicant include a Curriculum Vitae, and a statement describing how they would engage scientifically during their visit and how that engagement would enhance their own research program and impact their undergraduate research mentoring. Additionally, one letter of support is required from a scientific colleague that specifically addresses the intent of the applicant's award application; applicants will be prompted to enter contact information for the letter writer so that the support letter can be solicited on your behalf.

Examples of engagement as a Fellow include: attending a KITP research program in their field of interest, interacting with another KITP research program outside of their main line of research to establish a new research direction, networking with other scientists, using the time for existing focused research activities, or potentially collaborating with UCSB or KITP faculty, scientific visitors or postdocs.

The deadline to apply is Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

KITP must receive a letter of support from a colleague by no later than Monday, October 21, 2024.

All applicants will be notified of awards after November 10, 2024.
