If you are not a U.S. citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident, you will need to determine if you will need a visa to visit the KITP. Our site has information on the various types of visas that may be appropriate for a stay at KITP and on the waiver program.
If you are not sure which visa you need, please click on Visa Types in the left column.
We would also like to inform you of other sites that may be helpful:
- UCSB's Office of International Students and Scholars
- National Academies Visa Site
- American Physical Society (APS) Visa Information for international visitors, especially about delays.
- United States Department of State Visa Waiver Program
The exact figures are not known, but probably 90% of all scientists not eligible to enter under the Waiver Program will find their visas delayed due to "administrative processing," a euphemism for a security review by the Departments of State and of Homeland Security. The delay is unpredictable but usually takes 3-6 weeks to clear. For further information, see the APS web link above concerning "visas mantis" reviews. Unfortunately, there is nothing that KITP can do to expedite this process, but, after 60 days, you should complete the NAS questionnaire.
