The KITP strongly encourages the participation of women and minorities in its programs. This is the responsibility of all coordinators, but please keep the coordinator responsible for ensuring diversity, the diversity coordinator, informed of your efforts. We require a brief report of these efforts and their results before issuing the bulk of your invitations, and another as part of the coordinators' summary report submitted at your program's conclusion.
We offer some additional flexibility to schedule short-term visits by applicants whose schedules are constrained by childcare, spouse's career demands, care of disabled or elderly relatives, or other family issues, increasing the allowance of short-term visitors to two per week. "Short-term" is defined as a one- or two-week visit. Your total desk allocation for long- plus short-term visitors is still 23; for any given week you can have 22 long-term+1 short-term or 21 long-term +2 short-termers. The second short-term spot, when you choose to use it, is specifically designated for someone whose family constraints will not allow him or her to visit for longer. The diversity coordinator should pay special attention to tracking and allocating these slots.
We continue to offer the Family Fund and other support of long visits by those with families, so please think of the short visits as a second option for recruiting great participants who face these constraints.
