Planned Giving

Creating a Legacy at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics

Planning to include the KITP in your will or estate offers the opportunity for significant tax benefits, the possibility of additional lifetime income, and - most importantly - the chance to make scientific discoveries possible at KITP for future generations.

Legacy gifts power the core of KITP: the people. These gifts sustain the Institute by supporting our early career scientists and providing operational support for scientific programs and community outreach efforts. In perpetuity, a legacy gift ensures that there are no barriers to discovery at KITP.

In addition to membership in the KITP Legacy Society, special recognition and naming opportunities remain available in Kohn Hall and the Charles T. Munger Physics Residence for irrevocable planned gift commitments to our KITP endowment fund.

When deciding whether to make an estate gift to KITP, it is helpful to ask yourself and your family some questions...

What can I give?
Planned gifts are often funded by a donor’s assets, including cash, stock, real property, retirement plan assets, life insurance policies, business interests and more. Utilizing any (or a combination) of these assets to establish a KITP legacy may provide you with highly beneficial tax savings and the possibility of additional lifetime income. If you intend to leave assets to your heirs, we can also help you explore the best assets to gift that minimize inheritance taxes.

Do I want to minimize capital gains?
We can provide you with sample scenarios regarding charitable remainder trusts and charitable gift annuities, both of which can help offset the gains associated with selling appreciated assets (real estate, stock, etc.)

Do I need additional income?
We can explore which assets may work with a life income gift.
